Here now the Interview with the german Producer of the first Bot for RtCW.
HerrK:
At first please introduce yourself to the readers
kaji:
My name is Torben Könke, I am 19 years old and I live in Lüneburg,
where I am still going to school.
HerrK:
When and how did you find to RtCW?
kaji:
When RtCW appeared, I played the Single Player directly, but then I didn’t play it for a long time.
A fiew months ago, I installed it again and now I play it online from time to time.
HerrK:
When and why did you seize the resolution to code a bot for RtCW?
kaji:
Since I began to program for a Quake 3 Mod I had been interested in AI.
A ¾ year ago, when the Mod came to an end, I had time to learn more about the AI techniques;
actually I wanted to write only a simple Bot for Q3A, which you can direct through the map,
but when I finished that so far, I thought I can still go on with it.
When I had to teach the bot to deal with weapons, I decided to change to RtCW
because I don’t play Q3A (I was never such a big fan of Railgun and so on)
but I want to remain to the Quake 3 Engine.
HerrK:
How did you feel the feedback of the community after release?
kaji:
It was better than expected. I would’nt have meant that so many people would be interested
in a Bot for RtCW, meanwhile it’s already some years old.
At first I thought about offering the Mod on my private Webapace (2 GB Traffic),
fortunately I didn’t!
HerrK:
Is WolfBot 1.0 finished or do you want to release further versions and upgrade it regularly?
kaji:
In any case! I am not content with the current version of the WolfBot at all.
I still have got some ideas to put into practice,
but the next version will be only a bugfix and there won’t be new features.
HerrK:
Which knowledge does such a project require and how much time did you invest?
kaji:
The Programming by itself took 6 or 8 weeks. The time before I worked on a Q3A Mod
and therefore I knew the RtCW code (which is similar to the Q3A Code) well.
HerrK:
What do you think about the current discussion in the Community... RtCW vs. ET ?
kaji:
I play quite rarely online, and I didn’t test ET already, so I can’t say anything about this topic.
HerrK:
In this context the next question: Will there be a "WolfBot for ET“ programmed by you?
kaji:
No. At least not in the near future.
I am not ready with WolfBot yet and it will take a few months to upgrade it.
As far as I know another team is programming bots for Enemy Territory,
so perhaps there will be some ET bots soon.
HerrK:
Might you still greet somebody?
kaji:
Botman and Count Floyd even if they don’t know who I am. :-)
Without the possibility to be able to throw every now and then a look into the Source Code of HPB or POD bot,
WolfBot Would not have been developed.
HerrK:
I say thank you, to spend me Your time for the interview and hope we hear more of you, cu...
